THE BOMBING OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST
In May 1990, Judi Bari, a 40-year-old single mother of two and a pioneering organizer who bridged the labor and environmental movements, was in the midst of a campaign to save the ancient redwoods of Northern California when a bomb exploded in her car, critically wounding her. Within hours, while in intensive care, she was accused of planting the bomb herself, and arrested. Although the case against her quickly fell apart, the FBI continued to maintain that she and her passenger were the only suspects – despite multiple death threats she’d received before the explosion. Bari suspected the FBI of trying to frame her. She sued the agency, and was eventually vindicated with a $4.4 million jury verdict.
The bombing remains unsolved.
